The Whole Truth and Nothing Butt is the new, long-gestating documentary film about Austin, Texas psychedelic punk legends The Buttholes Surfers, and EVR welcomes filmmaker Tom Stern to the booth along with guitarist Paul Leary. Formed in 1981, the Surfers mutated from the hardcore scene into a full on, acid-drenched circus that visually were a Dada-inspired, full-on theatrical immersive live experience unparalleled by any peers. Dark comedy, exploration of the seediest facets of America’s underbelly, film, dance, strobe lights, fire, and a crushing sonic wall all constituted a Butthole Surfers show, unforgettable to any who witnessed. Throughout the years, the band’s footprint galvanized outsider artists, musicians and filmmakers with inspiration, not to mention the burgeoning grunge movement that exploded in the ’90s. They even had a rock radio hit. The film, screening at Nighthawk Cinema in Prospect Park April 29th and 30th, is being presented by the Doc N Roll Festival. A large LP reissue campaign on Matador Records has happened in 2023, and the band has also announced a June date for an unreleased 1998 LP After the Astronaut. I’m guest today on Oh! Brother, hosted by OG Fall drummer/bassist Paul and Steve Hanley. (Photo Credit: Tim Soter) Today: Richard Langston, author of the new Clean biography In The Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul, joins The Brian Turner Show. The two will be chatting extensively about this brilliant band’s 1978-2016 life, which was punctuated by periods on inactivity but inevitably continual returns that netted them deep and dedicated international fandom. Founded by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour, initial rotating lineups traversed their New Zealand homeland with budget tours, met with degrees of alienation from the established Auckland punk scene. Their psychedelic pastiche contained deep love of Barrett, The Beatles, Velvets, Hendrix, and Arthur Lee, which showed in their rudimentary DIY ethic; a heady formula out of fashionable step and thus triggering retreat back to their Dunedin hometown. However,  surprise success of their first single hitting the top 20 trigged a great leap forward for not only the Kilgours (now joined by future Bats founder Robert Scott), but a newfound communal scene in The Clean’s wake that launched not only the Flying Nun label but a score of kindred spirit groups. They eventually achieved notoriety internationally despite periods of pause, and massively influenced a big slab of American indie rock units as well. Langston chronicles the great heights of this band live and on record with dutiful shoutouts to those in their circles who helped elevate them. We’ll be playing a bunch of live Clean tracks as well, and playing an excerpt from an interview I did with David and Hamish in 2021).

Pull yourself up to the First Avenue booth on Wednesday, April 8th at 5pm during Brian Turner’s 4-6pm show as he welcomes local musical mensches Marija Kovačević & Rob Mayson for a live session at EVR’s studio. Respectively armed with broken violins and a mic’d squawking drumstool, the duo will explore the ritualistic, improvisational worlds of sonic decay with raw, acoustic-based, and quite physical presentation amidst the live environs of the East Village itself. Serbian-born Kovačević has travelled the world conducting her minimalistic broken violin performances in numerous locales, Mayson has been in assorted musical units both in Australia and the USA, and is a stalwart of the live local music scene with his productions at Abasement and Stereo Mandrax.
